About the NHESCThe City is the founding member of the New Haven Economic Security Coalition (NHESC), begun in 2002 as a public-private partnership to provide VITA services to the New Haven population. It is one of two VITA coalitions in New Haven. For more information about any of our member organizations, please click one of the links to the right. More information about the history of the NHESC to come soon! About the VITA programThe Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is a national program supervised by the IRS. Trained and certified volunteers provide free tax assistance to low- and moderate-income individuals and families. Through this program, local residents can claim the tax benefits they deserve without having to spend money on a paid preparer, benefitting them and the New Haven economy. One major focus of the VITA program is ensuring that eligible taxpayers receive the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a credit that can put thousands of dollars in the hands of working families.
